The journey began 100 years ago
1918 saw the founding of Specialmaskiner AB in Gothenburg, Sweden. The main operation back then was based on design and production of special machines for the shipping sector; the name Specialmaskiner means ‘special machines’ in Swedish. Up until the 1920s, operations expanded when the company was made an agent for various ‘basic’ components such as packaging and the like.
The 1930s were distinguished by the Wall Street Crash of 1929, and in Sweden this hailed the beginning of various aid projects such as building new roads. Specialmaskiner was involved from the start, and alongside other products road construction became an excellent source of business for the company. Many companies felt the effects of the Second World War, and Specialmaskiner was no exception. But in 1942 the company managed to become a supplier to the Swedish armed forces, providing the coastal artillery with 21 cm guns, the largest ever in the Swedish forces.
During the 1950s Specialmaskiner carried out several large investments, contributing to further expansion, and in 1965 the first hydraulic hoses for excavators reached the market. In 1972 Specialmaskiner became a subsidiary of the Almedahl Group, and in the 1980s, ’90s and 2000s several units were acquired and the operation continued to expand – in Sweden but also in Finland, China, Brazil, the USA, Poland, the UK and Denmark.
In 1993 the company changed its name to Specma Hydraulic. In 2016 Specma was acquired by Hydra-Grene A/S of Denmark and is now a part of the HydraSpecma Group, one of the leading manufacturers of hydraulics for industry in the Nordics, and among the world leaders in hydraulic solutions for the wind industry.
